Over 50 fishermen on three vessels were arrested for illegal fishing off the waters of Masbate recently, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said.
Investigation showed that a surveillance team from the Coast Guard spotted three vessels allegedly conducting illegal fishing off Guinauyan Island in Masbate last week during a maritime patrol.
Commander Julian Bayawa said two of the vessels tried to flee, to no avail.
Fishing boats “RS-2” skippered by Gomer Tidoso, “JS-1” skippered by Gorgonio Santillan, Jr. and “Jaurice” skippered by Rogelio Forrosuelo were later inspected escorted to the Masbate Port and turned over to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in the province.
According to Coast Guard, the fishermen were apprehended for violating provisions of Republic Act 10654 otherwise known as “The Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998” specifically on Sec. 86 Unauthorized Fishing; Sec. 95 Use of Active Gear in Municipal Waters; Sec. 113 Employing Unlicensed Fisher Work/Crew; Sec. 121 Use of Unlicensed Gear; Sec 123 Concealing, tampering or disposing evidence relating to an investigation of a violation; and Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) No. 246 on the banning of the operation of danish seine and modified danish seine in Philippine waters.
