A military report disclosed that the victim identified as Senior Chief Petty Officer (SCPO) Jesus Saavedra, 55, a personnel of the Naval Forces Southern Luzon (NavForSoL), based in Rawis, Legazpi City, was doing market chores in Binodegahan, Pio Duran, Albay, at around 4:10 p.m., when he was gunned down by six individuals believed to be members of the New People’s Army-Special Partisan Unit (NPA-SPARU).

The suspects then fled into the mountainous barangay in the said municipality.

Based on the investigation, SCPO Saavedra sustained four bullet wounds that caused his immediate death.

Ensign Estella Jane O. Sasil, acting director of the Naval Forces Southern Luzon (NavForSoL), said the Philippine Navy strongly condemns the violent act of the NPA Communist Terrorists and is deeply saddened by the incident.

“We are one with the family of SCPO Saavedra in seeking for an assurance that justice will be served,” Sasil said.

Sasil said SCPO Saavedra was due for retirement in 2019.

He was a senior enlisted personnel of NavForSoL designated as assistant command master chief petty officer responsible in the supervision of the morale and welfare of the personnel.
