Vice mayor, escort killed, mayor survives in La Union ambush

BALAOAN, La Union – The incumbent vice mayor of this town was killed while his daughter-mayor survived after they were ambushed by unidentified armed men in front their house in Barangay Cabua-an here at around 8:10 a.m. Wednesday.

Initial police reports showed that Vice Mayor Alfred Concepcion and his daughter Mayor Aleli Concepcion were on their way to the municipal hall onboard two vehicles, an Innova with plate number AOG 966 and Hyundai Starex van with plate number SHZ 467, when several armed men allegedly strafed their cars with high-powered guns.

Sources said the vice mayor allegedly suffered several gunshot wounds on his body and was rushed to the Balaoan District Hospital and later transferred to the Lorma Medical Center in San Fernando City but he was declared dead at 10 a.m.

Hospital personnel said the daughter was in safe condition and eight other victims. However, they could not reveal other information yet as of this report.

Aside from the vice mayor, his escort Mike Ulep was also declared dead.

Chief Inspector Silverio Ordinado, spokesperson of the La Union police provincial office, said the suspects immediately escaped after the incident.
He said a probe is ongoing. He added that dragnet operations are being conducted in the towns of Bangar, Sudipen, Luna, and San Juan, all in La Union to trap the suspects.
