A fire broke out at a Philippine Navy (PN) base housing a cache of short firearms in Sangley Point, Cavite on Friday, a military official said.

Commander Jonathan Zata, Naval Public Affairs chief, said a fire occurred at one of the igloos of the Naval Ordnance Depot, Naval Base around 5:30 a.m.

“There was no reported personnel casualty,” Zata said.

However, he confirmed that the igloo contains ammunition from small caliber firearms including those for M203 with smoke grenades.

Firefighting units of the Navy, Philippine Air Force (PAF) and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) responded to the area and placed the blaze under control at 7:45 a.m.

“The navy’s ordnance personnel are aptly trained and equipped to respond to and properly handle the situation,” Zata said.

“As part of the procedures, adjacent offices even residents from the on-base housing for AFP [Armed Forces of the Philippines] personnel were duly alerted and advised to proceed to designated evacuation areas,” he added.

At around 7:53 a.m., authorities declared the fire out.

Arson investigators have conducted a follow-up investigation to determine the cause of the fire, according to Zata.
