The European Union (EU) on Friday strongly condemned the killing of human rights lawyer Benjamin Tarug Ramos, secretary general of Negros Occidental Chapter of the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL) on November 6.
Ramos was shot at close range by riding-in-tandem assassins in front of a store on Roxas Street, near a public plaza in Kabankalan City.
“The European Union expresses its sincere condolences to the families of all the victims and looks to the ongoing investigations, as announced by the Government, to swiftly bring those responsible to justice,” the EU Delegation said in a statement issued in concurrence with all the EU Heads of Mission in the Philippines.
Ramos was the chief lawyer for the sugarcane workers federation in Negros Occidental and has extended assistance to farmers following the killing of nine sugarcane farmers in Sagay on October 20.
Based on the list compiled by NUPL, Ramos was the 24th practicing lawyer killed in work-related attacks in the Philippines since August 2016.
