Cambodia National Day

Published

The Kingdom of Cambodia celebrates its National Day today, commemorating the declaration of its independence from France in 1953 by King Norodom Sihanouk.

Cambodia is located on the Indochinese peninsula in Southeast Asia. It is bounded by Vietnam in the east, by Laos in the north, and by Thailand in the northwest. The Gulf of Thailand is in the southwest. Its capital is Phnom Penh.

Tourism and the apparel industry form the backbone of Cambodia’s economy. Among its top export products are clothing, footwear, leather, electrical machinery and equipment, and vehicles. The country is home of the grandest archeological site in Southeast Asia, the ancient city of Angkor. Its topmost tourist destination is Angkor Wat in Siem Reap. In Phnom Penh, the most visited spots are the Royal Palace and the National Museum.

Diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Cambodia were formally established in 1957. Ties were disrupted by the Kmer Rouge regime in 1975 but the two countries have maintained
cordial ties since the resumption of its diplomati relations in 1995. The Cambodians Embassy reopened in Manila in 1999.

The Philippines and Cambodia continue to strengthen their ties by forging agreements on economic and trade relations, agricultural and agribusiness collaborations, investments, air services, agriculture and agribusiness, tourism and sports cooperation. On July 9-10, 2010, the Philippine Embassy in Cambodia, the Department of Trade and Industry-Bureau of Export Trade Promotion
(BETP), the Philippine Chamber of Commerce, and Industry-Philippines-Cambodia Business Council (PCBC) organized the First Philippine Trade and Investment Mission to Cambodia in Phnom Penh. On July 21, 2013, 400 Filipinos attended the first-ever Inter-Agency Service Mission to Cambodia organized by the Philippine Embassy in Phnom Penh and the Samahan ng mga Pilipino sa Cambodia (SAMAPI). The event brought together various Philippine government agencies to disseminate information in delivering services to Filipino nationals in Cambodia such as the processing of Overseas Employment Contracts, Philhealth, PAG-IBIG Fund, enrollment in Social Security Services, and other consular services.

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Cambodia, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), together with the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts (MCFA) of Cambodia and the Philippine Embassy in Phnom Penh, featured the Cambodian Artist Troupe in the “Days of Cambodian Culture in the Philippines” at the Cultural Center of the Philippines last September 21, 2018. A concert at the Rizal Park Open-Air Auditorium was held last September 22, 2018.

We congratulate the people and government of the Kingdom of Cambodia headed by His Majesty, King Norodom Sihamoni, and Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen, on the occasion of their National Day.
