In this age of technology, digitalization and security go hand in hand. One proof is the adoption of EMV cards. The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), one of the country’s leading local banks, is encouraging its clients to upgrade to EMV Debit Mastercard, not just because of the security it brings but also for its new and enhanced features.
EMV cards, named after developers Europay, MasterCard, and Visa, are now considered as the standard for card payments globally. Here in the Philippines, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has issued a mandate for local banks requiring them to help customers migrate into using EMV-powered ATM, credit, and debit cards to combat fraudulent bank transactions.
Compared to the traditional magnetic-stripe cards, EMV cards contain a microprocessor chip that secures every banking process, as well as personal data and information. The classic magnetic-stripe cards we are all familiar with use unchanging data that authorize banking transactions, making them vulnerable to fraud and hacking. EMV cards, on the other hand, produce unique, one-time-use codes for every transaction, thus making information difficult to clone.
BPI has provided additional functions for their EMV cards so that clients can enjoy a seamless banking experience. The BPI EMV Debit Mastercard is powered with the Account Linkage feature, which, as the name suggests, allows users to check, track, and process transactions for up to nine linked BPI accounts using just one card in any BPI ATM. One can also access accounts anytime, anywhere via BPI’s online and mobile banking.
While there are still some people who prefer purchasing with cash, users who like to go cashless can also benefit from the BPI EMV Debit Mastercard. Clients can now ditch long queues at the cashier, as the BPI EMV Debit Mastercard is accepted in a number of Bancnet, POS and EPS terminals across the country.
The BPI EMV Debit Mastercard also promotes convenient access to cash abroad through Mastercard-affiliated ATMs. Frequent overseas travellers who have the BPI EMV Debit Mastercard won’t need to call any BPI branch to have their cards activated for international access, as BPI EMV-powered cards have this function by default.
