DAVAO CITY – Presidential son Sebastian “Baste” Z. Duterte filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for vice mayor of this city, ending days of speculation on who will be the running mate of his sister incumbent Mayor Sara Z. Duterte Carpio.
Duterte was accompanied by his sister at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office at the Ramon Magasaysay Park here, 12 noon, Wednesday when he filed his COC.
In an interview, the presidential son said he had been thinking of seeking an electoral post months ago, but had difficulty in arriving at a decision because he had no experience in politics.
“Baste” is more known as being an artist, surfer and a rock musician. He also had an adventure television program.
“It is a long process and I thought about it, month ago and it is not an easy decision for me but eventually, I need to decide,” he said.
Duterte said he will be happy and honored to serve the people of the city he loves.
He said before filing his COC, he talked to his father President Duterte on his political bid and the latter gave him the go signal.
“Sabi niya sa akin na trabaho lang (My father advised me to just do my job),” he said.
Duterte also admitted that there were some misunderstandings with his sister at first because he had initially refused her offer for him to be her running mate.
“Umayaw ako kasi nga medyo bago sa akin nabigla ako (I refused because I was shocked since it is new to me),” he said.
Despite the lack of experience, Duterte said he was confident that he will serve the city the best way he can.
“All I can offer is my honesty and genuine service to the people,” he said.
The presidential son said he will not promise the people what he can do because they might assume and expect more from him.
Duterte also denied that the filing of his candidacy was in preparation for any possible substitution for his sister, who may change her mind and suddenly run for a Senate seat.
