The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said that it cannot easily disqualify a candidate, who is included in the “narcolist,” from participating in the midterm elections because it requires due process.

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Friday requested the poll body to disqualify those tagged as “narco-politicians.”

“I included it on yesterday’s agenda on the en banc and nirefer namin sa (Comelec) law department for further study kasi babalansahin iyan (I included it on yesterday’s agenda on the en banc and we refer it to the (Comelec) law department for further study because we need to balance it),” said Comelec Chief Sheriff Abas.

Abas said the disqualification of a candidate requires due process.

“Hindi pwedeng nasa listahan ka eh DQ (disqualified) ka agad. Pangalawa, titingnan natin yung listahan kung under the rules eh pwede ba natin sila I-DQ (It is not right that although you are included in the list, you will be disqualified. Second, we have to study if it is under the rules if we can disqualify them),” he said.
