An officer of the Valenzuela City Commission on Elections (Comelec) debunked rumors that President Duterte’s common-law wife, Honeylet Avanceña, will run for mayor in Valenzuela City.
Since last week, talk has been rife that Avanceña will challenge Mayor Rex Gatchalian in next year’s elections.
The clan of Avanceña is from Barangay Gen. T. de Leon in the city.
The speculation is that she would contest the mayoralty to strengthen the influence of political party Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) – founded by the presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte – in Valenzuela.
However, Valenzuela City Comelec Officer Felton Sadang said the rumor is likely to be false because Avanceña is not a registered voter in the city’s 2nd District.
He added that it would not be possible for her to use another name to register.
Sadang furthered that if Avanceña is running in the May 2019 elections, she would definitely pose inquiries at the Comelec office, which she has not done.
As of posting, it appears that Gatchalian will be running unopposed.
