CATBALOGAN CITY – Nine people were rescued when a motorboat capsized at the vicinity of Sitio Canduyong, Brgy. Estaka in Maqueda Bay here at about 10:50 p.m, Thursday .
Initial investigation disclosed that at about 6 p.m., despite the advisory from Coast Guard Eastern Visayas prohibiting all vessels from sailing due to Typhoon “Ompong,” said 53-year old Joseph Duran, the boat captain, and his crew were traveling from Cinco Sierra Island toward Brgy. San Roque, Buri Island.
The motorboat accidentally capsized due to strong waves.
PRO8 Information Officer PSupt. Bella Rentuaya said the crew members were able to swim to a near islet and were saved by the rescue team from Catbalogan City Police, CDRRMO, Philippine Coast Guard and the Philippine Army, which immediately proceeded to said place at around 10 p.m.
The rescued crewmembers were brought to Red Cross Office for proper disposition.
