Robredo finds ally in former SolGen Hilbay

By Raymund Antonio

Vice President Leni Robredo found an ally in former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay about President Duterte’s remark he will resign if former Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. wins his election protest against her.

“Malinaw ang Saligang Batas at advanced mag-isip (The Constitution is clear and the advanced thinking): if the President resigns, the Vice President takes over,” said Hilbay.

“No questions asked, tapos ang usapan (end of discussion),” he stressed.

The former solicitor general said Duterte should order a probe into the P6.8 billion worth of shabu or crystal meth that supposedly slipped past the Bureau of Customs (BOC) instead of diverting controversies surrounding his administration.

Hilbay countered Duterte’s attempt to skirt the issue on the illegal drug shipment by floating his plans to resign if Marcos wins his election case against Robredo.

“Ang mas importanteng tanong: bakit walang intensyong mag-imbestiga si Presidente Duterte sa P6.8 Billion na droga na sinabi ng PDEA na nakalusot sa BOC? (The more important question is: Why is President Duterte has no intention to investigate the P6.8 billion worth of drugs that slipped past BOC.),” he said.

A total of 1,000 kilograms of shabu are believed to have entered the country despite coordinated efforts of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), BOC, and the Philippine National Police (PNP).

PDEA discovered on August 10 four magnetic lifters in Cavite, but the containers were already empty.

These were similar to the two lifters containing 500 kilograms of illegal drugs intercepted by the PDEA and the BOC at the Manila International Container Port (MICP) last August 7.

Hilbay expressed alarm that Duterte himself downplayed the incident instead of directing concerned agencies to investigate the matter.

“Hindi natin nakitaan si Duterte ng anumang galit gayung malaking batik ito sa kampanya kontra ilegal na droga (We did not see Duterte get angry given that this is a big blow to his campaign against illegal drugs.),” he said.
