LEGAZPI CITY, Albay — The Department of Education (DepEd) Bicol regional director has frowned at the burning of schoolbags of students at the Bicol Central Academy in Libmanan, Camarines Sur and vowed to have it investigated as a case of child abuse.
“There was a clear manifestation of child abuse and a violation of our child protection policy,” said DepEd Bicol Regional Director Gilbert T. Sadsad about the incident that happened at the private school.
Last Saturday, a viral post on Facebook reached the knowledge of DepEd Bicol. It showed how belongings of some senior high school students studying at Bicol Central Academy were burned by the school’s administrator and owner.
It was learned that the bags and other belongings of the students were burned because they failed to comply with the school’s no-bag policy for the day.
“While we cannot sanction the offending person because he is under the jurisdiction of the authorities of a private school, we will be reviewing our policies if we can provide sanctions in terms of possible revocation of the school’s permit to operate and other benefits provided by the government,” said Sadsad.
“For child abuse we will recommend to certain group or agency like dswd for a criminal charges, but this is still to be studied,” the DepED official said.
