A suspected illegal recruiter offering work in Qatar has been arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
NBI Director Dante Gierran identified the suspect as Sarah Jane Gutierrez Esteban who was arrested by operatives of the NBI’s International Airport Investigation Unit (NBI-IAIU).
After her arrest, she was subjected to inquest proceedings before the Pasay City Prosecutor’s Office for violating Republic Act 8042 (the Migrant Workers and Overseas Act of 1995) as amended by RA 10022 and RA 9208 (Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003).
Gierran said the suspect has been offering her victims work as hotel staff in Qatar.
However, the NBI learned that the suspect is not licensed nor authorized to recruit Filipino workers for work abroad.
Esteban got arrested after several of her victims got offloaded at the NAIA.
The victims revealed that each of them paid P25,000 to the suspect as processing fees which were deposited through bank or money courier.
They were each given Malaysian tourist visas and were asked to travel to Malaysia where they will be given working visas to Qatar.
After learning that the victims got offloaded, the suspect advised the victims to meet her somewhere outside NAIA.
With this information, NBI operatives proceeded to the meeting place and arrested the suspect.
