An explosion caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) rocked the construction site of the public market in Barangay Poblacion, Datu Paglas, Maguindanao on Wednesday night, the military said.
Captain Arvin Encinas, the spokesman of the army’s 6th Infantry Division (6ID), said that based on the shrapnels recovered at the explosion site, a 40 mm ammunition for a grenade launcher was used in the IED.
Fortunately, no one was hurt or killed in the incident which took place at 7:40 p.m.
The army’s 33rd Infantry “Makabayan” Battalion immediately deployed 1st Lt. Eddie Dayag together with one squad led by Sgt. Ferdinand Gazmin to the area to help the local police in securing the scene of explosion and to investigate as well.
The police, in their investigation, are working on the theory that a local group of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF)-Karialan faction led by Ustadz Sulaiman Tudon and based in Sitio Mopac, Poblacion, Datu Paglas was behind the blast.
Encinas said the blast was meant to sow fear.
“They want to create fear in the area considering that the support of the LGU (local government unit) and community against them is there. So its revenge on the LGU,” Encinas said in Filipino.
