Iloilo City— Mayor Jessie Alecto of Dingle town in Iloilo province has resigned.
Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. confirmed Thursday that Alecto submitted to him a resignation dated July 1, but was only received by Defensor’s office yesterday.
There was no specific reason for Alecto’s resignation, but he said in his resignation letter that “it has been a pleasure and privilege serving the people of Dingle.”
Defensor said he will accept Alecto’s resignation and Vice Mayor Rufino Palabrica III will assume as mayor.
In a Thursday press conference, Defensor told the local media that rumors have been circulating that there was a prior agreement between Alecto and Palabrica, who served as town mayor for nine consecutive terms and ran for vice mayor during the 2016 elections.
“He (Alecto) agreed to run and then would step down after some time so that Palabrica could become mayor,” Defensor said.
But the plan was derailed when the Office of the Ombudsman ordered Palabrica dismissed late in 2016 for grave misconduct and dishonesty.
Palabrica and his wife used a dummy for business firm Tri-B Marketing, which engaged in several transactions with the local government of Dingle when he was still mayor.
By May of this year, the Sandiganbayan dismissed the four counts of graft charges filed against Palabrica.
