Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra has vowed to speed up the resolution of a 2016 murder case of a construction worker who was allegedly killed by members of the family of a mayor in Cebu province.
Guevarra gave his assurance after being approached by Josefina Delima, the mother of Gilbert Delima who was killed in the town of Santa Fe, Bantayan Island on May 7, 2016.
“Ginagawa po namin ang aming makakaya upang ang nasabing kaso ay malutas sa lalong madaling panahon (We are doing everything we could to ensure the early resolution of the case),” said Guevarra in a statement as he recounted his meeting with Josefina.
The Secretary recalled that Josefina told him, “Kayo na lang po ang makakatulong sa akin (Only you can help me).”
Guevarra said Josefina has feared for the safety of her family including the two children left behind by her son since she is only a plain housewife and her husband a pedicab driver in Toledo, Cebu.
Gilbert was the former employee of the family of Santa Fe Mayor Jose Esgana.
Under the case, Gilbert was allegedly killed by the mayor’s brother-in-law Pablo Paul Escarlan and the mayor’s son, Joanes Paulo Esgana, at the mayor’s house.
A witness said he saw Escarlan repeatedly shot Gilbert at close range while Joanes stood by.
The murder case is currently under review before the Department of Justice (DOJ) after the provincial prosecutor dismissed the case.
