The Holy Father Pope Francis has appointed Diocese of Cubao Bishop Honesto F. Ongtioco as the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Malolos after it was declared ‘sede vacante’ following the death of Malolos Bishop Jose T. Oliveros last week.
In his new assignment, Ongtioco, who is currently serving as the first bishop of the Diocese of Cubao in Quezon City, will oversee the Malolos diocese, which has 108 parishes with about 200 priests. Ninety-four percent of its estimated three million population are Roman Catholics.
Born on October 17, 1948, Ongtioco, who will turn 70 this year, previously served as the second bishop of the Diocese of Balanga in Bataan.
Meanwhile, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles presided over the requiem mass at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Cathedral Basilica Minore of the Immaculate Conception for Bishop Oliveros.
Bishop-elect of Iba, Zambales Most Rev. Bartolome Santos gave the homily.
The late 71-year-old prelate was interred at the Malolos Cathedral crypt near the church altar.
