Iloilo City — A group of residents of a barangay in Mina town, Iloilo, is opposing the creation of a sanitary landfill.
The residents of Barangay Janipa-an West claim that the proposed landfill will most likely cause air and water pollution.
When it rains, “toxic metals and chemicals coming from the landfill will contaminate our deep wells, which serve as our source of potable water,” they claimed in a letter to Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr.
The residents fear that the landfill could trigger health problems such as respiratory or skin illnesses and even tuberculosis.
The toxic materials dumped at the landfill could affect the suitability of the soil to farming, they said.
Mina Mayor Rey Grabato said the proposed Sanitary Landfill and Eco-Park Project is a requirement under the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. Mina does not have a sanitary landfill.
