Supreme Court (SC) Justice Samuel R. Martires is an aspirant to the post of Ombudsman which would be vacated in July with the retirement of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales.
Martires, who retires in January next year, was President Duterte’s first appointee to the 15-member SC. It was not known immediately who nominated Martires who was a former trial court judge and former associate justice of the Sandiganbayan.
Earlier, SC Justices Presbitero J. Velasco Jr. and Teresita J. Leonardo de Castro had declined their nominations as Ombudsman.
Velasco and De Castro are retiring in August and October, respectively, this year.
With Velasco and De Castro out as nominees, the remaining aspirants, aside from Justice Martires, are Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III, former Sandiganbayan presiding justice Edilberto Sandoval, Davao City regional trial court judges Carlos Espero II and Rowena Apao-Adlawan, Edna Batacan who lawyered for President Duterte, and Duterte’s law school classmates, lawyers Rex Rico and Felito Ramirez.
