DAVAO CITY – Due to the real estate boom in the region, the Department of Labor and Employment in Region 11 (DOLE 11) has noted a spike in the demand for
construction-related jobs.

This was the reason DOLE 11 said it expected job openings for the construction industry to dominate the two-day Labor Day Job Fair on May 1 and 2 in two venues here.

Based on the records of DOLE 11, as of April 13, there are about 2,349 jobs available in the construction industry – 1,205 masons, 528 carpenters, 402 tile setters, 144 steel man and 70 foremen.

Marlito D. Ayala, focal person for DOLE 11, told reporters on Monday that they were surprised with the huge demand for jobs coming from the construction industry, and they expected this to continue for several years, owing to the growing number of buildings that are being built, and the government’s massive infrastructure program called the “Build. Build. Build.”

Ayala added they now see the need to train more construction workers in order to address the deficiency in the number of workers with ready skills to work in construction-related jobs.

Other domestic jobs in the top 10 include 130 sales representatives, 103 service crews, 70 customer representatives, 60 technical support representatives, and 54 management trainees.

For overseas, demands are 1,933for nurses, 200 sales associates, 174 assistant herd manager in New Zealand, 120 waiters/waitresses, 113 English teachers for Japan, 112 cleaners, 100 household workers, 100 welders, 90 laborers, and 40 engineers.

There are 116 companies which have signed up for the two-day “Trabaho, Negosyo, Kabuhayan (TNK) Job and Business Fairs to be held at Gaisano Mall of Davao and SM City of Davao, with a total of 11,882 job vacancies.

The event will be jointly organized by DOLE and Department of Trade and Industry that will organize a Diskwento Caravan and business seminars simultaneous with the job fairs.
