‘Planet X’ the hoax, and potential habitat in the fringes of solar system

By Rizal Obanil

I haven’t actually heard of this one, but there seems to be a group of people nowadays that believes that the world is going to end soon.

This Feb. 7, 1984 photo made available by NASA shows astronaut Bruce McCandless II, participating in a spacewalk a few meters away from the cabin of the Earth-orbiting space shuttle Challenger, using a nitrogen-propelled Manned Maneuvering Unit. (NASA via AP / MANILA BULLETIN)

Now, of course you’ve probably heard of other end-of-the-world scenarios and theories during the course of your life but this one is most likely the most hilarious of them all.

In his column for Mashable Asia Marcus Gilner wrote that according to the latest end-of-the-world theory, a mysterious “Planet X or Nibiru” is going to appear out of nowhere and smash into Earth.

I bet that the makers of Deep Impact and Armageddon never thought of that plot. But as often is the case truth is stranger than fiction.

But according to Gilner this theory seems to be a “recycled” one since something similar to this came out in 2003 but no such cataclysmic event happened therefore it was rehashed in 2012 and still nothing happened.

Insofar as NASA is concerned, there is actually a “Planet X” in their vocabulary but that refers to a planet that might be discovered sometime in the future that has been lurking in the fringes of the solar system.

Whereas one refers to the destruction of all life on Earth as we know it, the other refers to a potential habitat, if ever we do develop the technology in the future to exploit it or more importantly to even get there in the first place.
