Army denies Samar schools’ militarization

Catarman, Northern Samar – The Philippine Army refuted claims of left-leaning organizations that schools in Northern Samar are being militarized.

Col. Ramil Bitong, Army 803rd Infantry Brigade commander, said the groups were trying to create issues against the government and the Army.

Bitong said that instead of bringing out the issues in Manila, they should have discussed them with him, Governor Jose L. Ong and their municipal mayor.

“Actually, it is not exactly true that they are militarized and they used the school, they were allowed as it was still vacation and they could not refuse the Army as they are the only ones helping the school,” he told the Manila Bulletin.

Last week, organizations claiming to be from Northern Samar held a lightning rally at the central office of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Pasig City to denounce what they said was the militarization of Northern Samar schools.
