About a thousand families were rendered homeless after their homes were engulfed flames in a five-hour blaze Wednesday at Laong Compound Barangay Almanza Uno, Las Piñas City.
According to Fire Senior Inspector Pena Borlad, of the Las Piñas City Bureau of Fire Protection, the fire started at around 2:54 a.m. from the house of a certain Marilyn Cura, at Phase 1, Laong Compound in Las Piñas City. According to investigators, Cura reportedly uses wood for cooking.
The fire was raised to the fifth alarm around 5 in the morning as it quickly spread to nearby houses that were made of combustible materials.
Firefighters had difficulty putting out the fire due to the area’s narrow streets and lack of installed fire hydrants. Seven reportedly suffered minor injuries and one unidentified person was said to have died in the blaze.
The fire was put out around 7 in the morning, turning 575 houses into ash while the damage to properties was pegged at P1.5 million. Investigators are still conducting mopping operations to make sure that the area is safe.
