Moving moments at Dengvaxia hearing

Updated

By MB Online

The hearing on the Dengvaxia issue at the Senate today — branded as the last — was highlighted by a tear-jerking moment involving the parents of the victims.

Moved to tears one of the guest parents started complaining. “You don’t know how we feel,” she said in Filipino.

Holding pictures of their children the parents were recognized by Senator Richard Gordon shortly after hearing Dr. Scott Halstead, US dengue specialist give his opinion about how the issue should have been handled by the government.

Gordon himself however admitted that he was unsure whether those who died were indeed victims of the controversial vaccine or if they succumbed to dengue or other diseases.

Dr. Halstead made a video warning against mass vaccination but it was not heeded.

At one point during the hearing Gordon summed up Halstead’s testimony which he said pertained to the effectiveness and ethics behind the government’s immunization program.

“Make sure na ‘yung pagkakamali masundan ng tama yan” (Let’s make sure that a wrong is followed by a right),” Gordon said.

“This one is self-inflicted by our gov’t so it’s important we act on it,” Gordon further said.

DOH Secretary Francisco Duque III on his part said that to let the government know about the problems of the supposed victims he revealed that he will be writing President Duterte soon.

Shortly after hearing another testimony from one of the mothers of the victims, Gordon moved to adjourn the hearing.

He said that they will be submitting a report soon and will continue to seek for what is right for the people.
