Chief Insp. Maria Bella Rentuaya, spokesperson of the Eastern Visayas Regional Police Office (PRO-8), identified the victim as Max Miro alias “Max,” legal age, a native of Albuera, Leyte and currently residing at Purok 3, Barangay Bantigue, Ormoc, Leyte.

Rentuaya said police operatives served an arrest warrant against Miro inside his house around 10 p.m. Friday when he “resisted arrest and fired his gun at the members of the operating team.”

Rentuaya said this prompted the operating team to retaliate, “hitting the suspect on different parts of his body.”

The arrest warrant dated January 5, 2017 was for a murder charge issued by Judge Carlos Arguelles, presiding judge of the Baybay, Leyte Regional Trial Court 8.

Rentuaya said Miro was rushed to Ospa Farmers Medical Center Hospital in Ormoc City where he was declared dead on arrival.

It was not immediately clear how Miro was working for Espinosa.

Responding Scene of the Crime Operatives recovered at the crime scene a caliber .45 pistol loaded with four live ammunition, and seven empty shells.

Miro was the latest among the aides of the Espinosas who were killed by unknown assailants.

On February 19, lawyer and Ronda, Cebu Vice Mayor John Ungab was killed by two unknown assailants in Cebu City. The incident happened near the Cebu City Hall of Justice.

Ungab was a legal counsel of Espinosa and he was accompanying the latter in the hearing of his case for violation of the election gun ban in 2010 when the incident happened.

In August 2016, Rogelio Bato Jr., also a lawyer of the Espinosa family, was shot dead by unidentified suspects in Tacloban City, Leyte.
