The Philippine Women Judges Association (PWJA) is holding its 23rd Annual Convention-Seminar from March 7 to 9, 2018 at the Manila Hotel with the theme “Fabulous @ 30.”This yearly activity coincides with the advance celebration of the 30th anniversary of the PWJA, which was officially established on October 7, 1987.
Justice Teresita J. Leonardo-De Castro, president of the PWJA will deliver the opening remarks. Mayor Joseph Ejercito Estrada will welcome delegates while Chief Justice Maria Lourdes P.A. Sereno will deliver a message..
This year’s guest of honor is Congresswoman Vilma Santos-Recto, Representative of the 6th District of Batangas.
Interesting topics will be discussed such as Canon on Propriety by Justice Ma. Filomena Singh, Stress Management and Personality Development by Bro. Jon Escoto, and Professional Conduct and Manners of Women Judges by Ms. C. Joycelyn Buensalido.
Awards of recognition will be given to judges who have rendered 25 years in service, Judicial Excellence awardees, and those promoted in the appellate court.
The PWJA will also honor its first president and founder, the Honorable Ameurfina Melencio-Herrera.
The PWJA was the first formally organized among ASEAN countries and has been recognized in the international community. It has hosted the 3rd Biennial Conference of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) in 1996, Asia-Pacific Conference in 2009 at the Manila Hotel, and in 2015 at Taal Vista Hotel in Tagaytay City.
In May 2016, Justice Leonardo-De Castro, as IAWJ president, presided over the 13th Biennial Conference of the IAWJ held in Washington, D.C., USA.
The PWJA has attended the IAWJ Asia-Pacific Conferences in Sydney, Australia.
Through the years, the PWJA has been upholding the rights of women and children and eradicating gender discrimination, and has actively engaged in vital issues such as sex slavery, human trafficking, international refugees, regional business and foreign policy, domestic and family violence, Inter-country Adoption laws and the impact of climate change.
By way of its Special Projects, the PWJA has given assistance to victims of calamities, disasters and armed hostilities.
As of today, the PWJA has grown into a strong and unified 912 women judges and justices all over the country.
