Helmet check yields firearm, shabu
A man, initially confronted by the police for not wearing a helmet, was eventually arrested for possession of illegal firearm and dangerous drugs Tuesday in Tondo, Manila.
Police reports identified the suspect as Rolando Navalta, 46, of No. 832 Luzon St. Sta. Cruz, Manila.
Elements of the Moriones-Tondo Police Station were reportedly conducting Oplan Sita along Road 10 near cor. Zaragosa St., Brgy. 20, Tondo, Manila, at around 3:40 a.m. when they chanced upon Navalta.
When police officers flagged him down for not wearing a helmet, the suspect, reportedly onboard a motorcycle with plate No. 8565 NP, swerved his vehicle and tried to escape from authorities.
Police officers, however, blocked his way, took his keys and demanded his driver’s license or official receipt, which the suspect failed to present.
Arresting officers recovered one .38 caliber with four live ammunition and two sachets of suspected shabu during a body search of the suspect, who will be subject to inquest proceedings before the city prosecutor’s office. (Hans Amancio)
Motorcyclist grabs woman’s bag
A bag containing no more than P500 and several office documents were stolen from a woman on her way to a business meeting in a robbery incident Tuesday in Manila.
Police reports identified the victim as Rogielyn Cabugawan, a customs representative from Isidro F. Faderguya Freight Forwarders located at 1010 Building, Mabini St., Ermita, Manila.
Initial investigation revealed that the victim, together with her co-worker named Zyrel Selerio, were waiting for their ride to MICP Pier on March 6 at 10:04 a.m. in front of their office when the suspect suddenly appeared.
The male suspect, reportedly onboard a motorcycle wearing a green jacket and a red helmet, then declared hold-up and took the red back pack, allegedly containing cash and several documents, from the victim.
The suspect then fled using his getaway vehicle towards Mabini St. and Kalaw Ave. The victim and her companion, meanwhile, went to the Manila Police Headquarters to report the incident.
A CCTV footage which captured the incident is currently being monitored by authorities. A follow-up operation is being conducted by the Pedro Gil Police Community Precinct to identify and apprehend the suspect. (Hans Amancio)
Truck driver fights back, is killed
A man who just finished delivering liquor to his customers was gunned down by men on motorcycle who tried to rob him in Quezon City, Tuesday afternoon.
Investigators of the Quezon City Police District identified the fatality as Rolando Saldaña, a 52-year old delivery truck driver, and a resident of Barangay Camarin, Caloocan City.
According to the two co-workers of Saldaña, they parked their delivery truck with plate number PYJ-739 along Igdalig Street near corner Mauban Street in Barangay Manresa, Quezon City, to count their delivered cases of bottled liquor.
The group then decided to head back to their warehouse but two armed men wearing helmets, face masks, and black jacket appeared and declared the heist.
When Saldaña refused to give his belongings and tried to fight back, one of the suspects suddenly shot him on his head then fled the scene.
The victim’s companions immediately ran and sought help from a tricycle driver who brought them to the authorities.
Authorities said that Saldaña died on the spot due to a gunshot wound that exited on the right portion of his head. (Alexandria Dennise San Juan)
