9 inmates injured in QC jail riot
Nine inmates were injured when a riot erupted inside the Quezon City Jail in the middle of visiting hours Sunday afternoon.
Jail Superintendent Ermilito Moral identified the wounded detainees as Erwin Maliwat, Michael Enciso, and Alexander Baura, members of Bahala na Gang, and Joel Solano, Jojo Responte, Allan Aquino, July Dublon, Roberto Romero, and Rodrigo Vinluan, members of Sigue-sigue Commando Group (SSC).
Based on the footage of the closed-circuit television, Vinluan was assisting a visitor in going out of jail when an unidentified member of Batang City Jail (BCJ) stabbed him from behind.
Members of SSC retaliated and started throwing objects at BCJ. As a result, gang members of Sputnik and Bahala Na Gang joined the commotion.
Stones, chairs, and improvised arrows were thrown by the gang members at each other while plywood boards were used as shields.
Jail officers and personnel from the nearby Kamuning Police Station (PS-10) were able to pacify the detainees with warning shots, after almost six minutes of mayhem..
Detainees with injuries were brought to East Avenue Medical Center .
According to Moral, the heat inside the jail and intrigue over some contrabands such as cigarettes and liquor may have triggered trouble among the detainees.. Jail authorities said they are conducting ‘Oplan Greyhound’ regularly to deter the entry of contraband inside the prison.
The jail warden admitted that because of the congestion inside the compound, which presently houses more than 3,000 inmates, commotions are usual. The jail was built for only 700 persons.
He added that they will be transferring more than 60 inmates to the Bureau of Corrections in Muntinlupa City.
A jail compound with 6,000 to 7,000 persons capacity is also expected to be built next year in Payatas, Quezon City, said Moral. (Alexandria Dennise San Juan)
