The entire police force of Jolo in Sulu was sacked from their posts following the escape of at least 12 inmates from the detention cell yesterday.
Senior Insp. Jemar delos Santos, spokesman of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), said the Jolo Municipal Police was already taken over by the provincial public safety battalion after the escape that occurred at around 10 a.m. yesterday.
“The relief was ordered by the regional director (Chief Supt. Graciano Mijares). All police stations were also alerted as part of the pursuit operation,” delos Santos told the Manila Bulletin in a phone interview.
The official said most of the inmates are facing drug charges.
Delos Santos identified them as Herbert Bael, Radzmir Salahuddin, Nurhassan Taasan, Alim Misah, Abdulwahid Lipae, Junal Sali, Alvin Hamdi, Al-Amil Kapili, Algamer Bantala, Muthamir Pangambayan, Khan Balang and Dante Abdulla.
“They used a picklock in opening the main padlock of the detention facility. All of the 29 inside escaped but 17 of them were recaptured,” he said.
The official said intelligence-gathering was already intensified to recapture the suspects, part of it is to check the background of all the escaped inmates.
Delos Santos said the relief of the entire police station will be temporary until such time that the investigation is done.
The probe is focused on how the 12 inmates were still able to escape considering that the incident occurred at around 10 a.m.
Should lapses are established, administrative charges would be slapped against the officers and officer-on-duty at the time of the escape.
