Former senator Juan Ponce Enrile supported the extension of martial law in Mindanao, and pointed out that President Duterte made the right call, even if the government successfully thwarted the Maute Group terrorists in Marawi City.
“Marawi was just a battle,” Enrile said at the Sandiganbayan.
The former Senate President was at the anti-graft court’s Third Division on Friday for the pre-trial hearing of his plunder case over the supposed misuse of his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).
“The fact that the government has succeeded in controlling the situation in that battle has not solved the problem. The problem is still there,” he stressed.
Enrile said terrorism would return if the government loses its grip on Mindanao.
“Don’t kid yourselves, if you do not have a system to control the situation it will explode again. The president was correct,” he said.
