Nation observes National Bible Month

Updated

The Philippine Bible Society (PBS), in partnership with multisectoral organizations, leads the observance of the month of January as National Bible Month with the aim of “putting a Holy Bible in every Filipino home as well as to encourage the public to read, study and live the Bible.”

President Duterte signed Proclamation No. 124 last year declaring the month of January as National Bible Month and the last week of January as National Bible Week “in recognition of the religious nature of the Filipino people and the existing influence of religion in human society.”

Lined up for the event are several activities that include the observance of National Bible Week on January 22 to 28 and National Bible Sunday on Jan. 28. Among the activities are a Bible marathon, Bible sale in PBS Bible houses and major bookstores, and the annual public oral Bible reading.

This year’s theme is “Ang Bibliya ang Sandigan ng Matuwid na Pamumuno at Pamumuhay” (The Bible is the Foundation of Righteous Leadership and Living).

According to a survey conducted by the PBS, more than half of Filipinos do not own a Bible, while about 70 percent of young people, including teenagers and young professionals, do not read the Bible because they do not know where to start and are unaware of the benefits of Bible-reading.
