Pinoys in Honduras alerted

The Philippine government has raised Alert Level 1 in Honduras due to the political turmoil that gripped the country following last month’s controversial general election.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) advised the members of the Filipino community in Honduras to take the necessary precautions during this period, adding that, “Alert Level 1 is being raised when there are valid signs of internal disturbance, instability, or external threat to the host country.”

As a precautionary measure, the foreign affairs office likewise advised the Filipino community members to get in touch with Philippine Honorary Consul Tito Bendeck in San Pedro Sula, Cortes, Honduras.

The DFA, however, did not provide the number of Filipinos who are currently working or living in Honduras.

Honduras was rocked by political unrest last week with the opposition candidate disputing the results of the elections.

Candidate Salvador Nasralla said he would not yield to the count of the country’s electoral commission, whose computer tally showed that President Juan Orlando Hernández had closed a gap that initially put the opposition bet ahead.
