More cruise ships to drop anchor in Boracay

By Tara Yap

Iloilo City — Before the year ends, three more international cruise liners will drop anchor in the waters off world-famous Boracay Island in Malay town, Aklan province.

Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Director Helen Catalbas for Western Visayas said that two MS World Dream ships will arrive on December 13 and 20, while MSC Lirica will arrive on Christmas Day. These three cruise liners are expected to bring 10,000 tourists and 4,721 crew members.

Aside from the three, 13 other cruise ships have docked off the coast of Boracay, the country’s most popular beach destination.

Based on DOT-6 data, the 13 cruise ships have brought over 17,000 tourists and more than 11,000 crew members for a day tour of Boracay.

“The increasing number of cruise ship arrivals mean Boracay is now being recognized as a prime international cruise destination,” Catalbas noted.

For next year, Boracay is expecting another 18 cruise liners with more than 50,000 and over 25,000 crew members.

For 2019, nine cruise ships are scheduled to dock off Boracay.
