President Duterte will lead tomorrow the destruction of more than 600 firearms belonging to the terrorist Maute Group during a ceremony to be held at the Philippine Army headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.
Army spokesman Lt. Col. Ray Tiongson said a total of 652 firearms, retrieved from the terror group which laid siege to Marawi City on May 23, would be destroyed.
“He (President Duterte) will be there to grace the event at 2 p.m. Wednesday,” Tiongson said.
The firearms consist of heavy machinegun, light machinegun, RPG (rocket-propelled grenade), sniper rifle, etc.
Tiongson said a road roller would be used to destroy the firearms then it would be cut by a circular saw.
He said the scraps would not be sold to junkshops but would instead be disposed of.
“It will be burned then the metal residues and scraps will be properly disposed of,” he said.
“We have a procedure to properly destroy the weapons. The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has direct policies or directives on how these will be disposed of.
So there will be a demilitarization ceremony to be held tomorrow (Wednesday),” Tiongson said.
Of the 652 firearms to be destroyed, Tiongson said more than 200 are unserviceable already.
When asked why instead of destroying them, the firearms just be issued to Civilian Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) members, Tiongson said they have their own issued firearms already.
