Tacloban City – Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy A. Cimatu, in his visit to the DENR regional office 8 (DENR-8), recently, (November 22), stressed to prioritize environmental protection through strict enforcement of laws on clean air, clean water, and solid waste management, a report from the DENR-8) based in this city, said here Thursday.
DENR-8 Regional Director Atty. Crizaldy M. Barcelo told Manila Bulletin in an interview that Secretary Cimatu addressing the men and women of DENR in region 8, during his speech, vowed to strengthen DENR field offices by capacitating its workforce to fully enforce environmental laws. He shared that under his leadership, lawyers have been hired for all Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (CENROs) in the region, Barcelo added.
It was learned that Cimatu likewise installed Provincial Environmental Management Units (PEMU) in some Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Offices (PENROs) to help ensure proper management of the environment and natural resources in the different provinces. “These are just some of DENR’s proactive measures to protect the environment and pursue violators of environmental laws,” Cimatu said during his speech.
Secretary Cimatu during his speech said that he is keen on enabling and empowering DENR field offices because they are most proximate to the people. According to Cimatu, “it is DENR’s duty to ensure that people breathe clean air, enjoys clean water, and lives in a clean environment. This function is essential in the field”.
Meanwhile, Cimatu assured to safeguard the welfare of DENR personnel by putting premium on meritocracy and recognizing performing employees who are rendering service with the highest degree of integrity and accountability.
Barcelo said that Secretary Cimatu is visiting all DENR regional offices to address issues and concerns in the field and personally lay the thrusts and directions of the Department under his leadership.
