Tacloban City – Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy A. Cimatu stressed the need to prioritize environmental protection through the strict enforcement of laws on clean air, clean water, and solid waste management.
Cimatu made the remarks during his visit to the DENR regional office on November 22.
DENR Regional Director Crizaldy M. Barcelo said the secretary vowed to strengthen DENR field offices by enabling them to fully enforce environmental laws. Barcelo said that under his leadership, lawyers have been hired for all Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (CENROs) in the region.
Cimatu also installed Provincial Environmental Management Units (PEMU) in some Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Offices (PENROs). “These are just some of DENR’s proactive measures to protect the environment and pursue violators of environmental laws,” Cimatu said.
He said he is keen on empowering DENR field offices because they are nearest to the people. “It is DENR’s duty to ensure that people breathe clean air, enjoys clean water, and lives in a clean environment. This function is essential in the field,” he said.
Cimatu said he is putting premium on meritocracy and recognizing performing employees who render service with the highest degree of integrity and accountability.
Barcelo said the secretary is visiting DENR regional offices to address issues and concerns in the field and explain the thrusts and directions of the department.
