Cebu City – At least 188 farmers in Negros Occidental received P1.7 million in livelihood assistance from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
DOLE-Negros Oriental Field Office Head Marites Mercado said the beneficiaries are from three rural workers’ associations duly registered by the DOLE in the province.
Mercado handed P865,316 to the Maninihon Tribu Bukidnon of Bayawan City. The group, she said, will use the amount to buy farm tools.
Jocinias Oriendo, the group’s chieftain, said they were grateful for the aid. “What we can do, in turn, is that we will be sure to improve and nurture our project,” Oriendo said.
The San Isidro Coconut Farmers Association of Tanjay City received P418,480. The association will engage in banana production.
Municipal Agriculturist Elvie Villaluz, assured DOLE the project of the beneficiaries will go a long way since the area is suited for banana plantation.
She said her office will help the beneficiaries find potential buyers and suppliers.
The Lower Calango Farmers Association (LCFA) of Zamboanguita received P416,150, which it will also use to buy more farm implements.
The assistance is seen to help enhance the association’s produce each harvest season.
