Vice President Ma. Leonor “Leni” Robredo has called on the public to stand united and not to let political differences weaken democratic institutions.

Vice President Leni Robredo reiterated the importance of creating an inclusive business model, and paving the way for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to thrive, during the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit, held on Tuesday, November 14, 2017. (OVP / MANILA BULLETIN)

“Parati nating ipinapaglaban, pinapagdasal, pinagtatrabahuhan na parati dapat nagkakaisa tayo para siguraduhin na malakas at matatag iyong mga institusyon ng demokrasya (We always fight, pray, work that we should always unite to ensure strong and stable democratic institutions),” she said.

“Kasi ito iyong magsisiguro na parating magiging maayos iyong buhay ng bawat Pilipino sa pang-araw-araw (Because these [democratic institutions] would always make sure the daily lives of every Filipino are okay),” the Vice President stressed.

The Vice President was asked to react to Supreme Court Associate Justice Teresita de Castro appearing before the House committee on justice deliberating the impeachment complaint against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

The SC en banc voted to allow justices and employees invited by the committee to testify in its hearings.

In an interview, Robredo declined to give a statement about the hearing.

Robredo instead emphasized the impeachment proceedings should not lead to weakening the democratic institutions in the country.

“Ako kasi, hindi ko napanood iyong hearing kahapon, kaya tingin ko unfair para mag-comment (I was not able to watch the hearing that’s why I think it is unfair to comment.),” she said.

According to Robredo, the public should be alarmed once these institutions started to weaken.

“Kaya sana iyong mga proseso na magaganap, iyong kaniyang kakahinatnan, lalong papalakasin iyong institusyon, hindi lulusawin at hindi papahinain (I hope the processes that will take place, its result will strengthen the institutions, not dissolve and weaken them),” the Vice President said.

Robredo, who is a lawyer, has repeatedly said impeachment complaints should not be used as a way to scare the voices of opposition.

“It is important that if there is a case, the evidence will be presented. The case will not be used to scare or silence those who are opposing. The impeachment is provided for by the Constitution, but it is important that it should have basis,” she said.
