Cebu City – Mayor Tomas Osmeña signed on November 2 an executive order (EO) creating an Anti-Illegal Mining Local Enforcement Team to stop illegal quarry operators in the city’s mountain barangays.
Under EO 28, the team will periodically inspect quarry sites, conduct roadside inspection of vehicles carrying mineral products and apprehend drivers and impound vehicles without delivery and transportation permits.
The team will submit its reports and programs to the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CCENRO), Office of the Mayor, and City Mining Regulatory Board.
Illegal quarrying in Barangay Binaliw has become a major concern because it is destroying roads, riverbanks, hills and mountains, Osmeña said.
Last August, three trucks loaded with filling materials were impounded after the drivers failed to present pertinent permits to the Peace and Order (POP) local enforcement team.
A cease-and-desist order was issued by CCENRO against illegal quarry sites run by Kalunasan Barangay Captain Nunilon Monares and two other quarry operators in Barangay Binaliw and Pulang Bato.
