The government is now trying to negotiate for the release of the four Filipino seafarers who were kidnapped in Nigerian waters during the weekend.
“Our labor attache told me someone is already negotiating (for their release),” Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre Bello III told reporters in an ambush interview Wednesday.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed yesterday the four Filipinos together with a Ukranian and a Hungarian sailor were abducted when their German-flagged ship passed through the Nigerian Delta last Saturday.
DFA said it is still trying to establish communication with the kidnappers of the Filipinos.
DOLE and DFA declined to identify the Filipino sailors to ensure their safety and privacy.
