More Filipinos doubt cops over self-defense claims

Published

By Ellalyn De Vera-Ruiz

More Filipinos have expressed doubt over police claims of self-defense against drug suspects they have killed, a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey results showed.

Respondents were asked: “In the government’s campaign against illegal drugs, the police are definitely telling the truth; probably telling the truth; undecided if telling the truth or not; probably not telling the truth; or definitely not telling the truth that the suspects they killed really resisted them?”

The survey was conducted last Sept. 23-27 and interviewed 1,500 respondents.

SWS found 37 percent of Filipinos saying the police are not telling the truth (19 percent definitely not telling the truth, 19 percent probably not telling the truth), 45 percent are undecided, and 17 percent say the police are telling the truth (13 percent probably telling the truth, 5 percent definitely telling the truth).

This brings the net opinion about the truthfulness (percentage definitely/probably telling the truth minus percentage probably/definitely not telling the truth) of the police to a significant -20.

SWS said this compares with the June 2017 survey, where 25 percent believed the police, 45 percent were undecided, and 28 percent did not believe the police, which translates to a net balance of -3.

It noted that net opinion about the truthfulness of the police was lowest in Metro Manila at -34 (13 percent definitely/probably telling the truth, 47 percent probably/definitely not telling the truth), followed by rest of Luzon at -31 (13 percent definitely/probably telling the truth, 44 percent probably/definitely not telling the truth), Visayas at -15 (20 percent definitely/probably telling the truth, 34 percent probably/definitely

In the survey, SWS found lower net satisfaction with President Rodrigo Duterte and national administration among those who expressed disbelief in police.

The net satisfaction (percentage satisfied minus percentage dissatisfied) with the performance of President Duterte was an excellent +73 among those who believed the police were definitely telling the truth about suspects who resisted arrest.

It was a very good +60 among those who believed the police were probably telling the truth, and a very good +57 among those who were undecided.

It was a good +43 among those who believed the police were probably not telling the truth, while it was a mere moderate +15 among those who believed they were definitely not telling the truth.

Similarly, net satisfaction with the national administration was excellent among those who believe the police were definitely telling the truth (+78), and those who say the police were probably telling the truth (+78), about suspects who resisted arrest.

It was very good +65 among those were undecided, a very good +50 among those who believed they were probably not telling the truth, and a good +30 among those who believed they were definitely not telling the truth.

The third quarter of 2017 SWS findings on public satisfaction with the performance of President Duterte and the overall national administration were reported by SWS last Octoer 8 and 19, respectively.

Most of this police are so useless and untrained and would kill innocent citizens just to get an award. They and their leaders should be held accountable for their crimes and laziness

his sounds more like Yellowtard BS. If I was a cop trying to arrest someone and they pull out a gun and threaten me with it I would shoot and I would demand a drug test of that person who may be injured or dead. For too long under previous administrations drug lords and their dealers have reigned and ruined so many people and families – it has too end!
