CAMP RAFAEL C. RODRIGUEZ, Butuan City – The Philippine National Police condemned the burning of several heavy equipment of a construction firm Friday midnight at Purok 7, Barangay Bonbon, Butuan City.
The regional command of Northeastern Mindanao Police Regional Office 13 (PRO 13) lashed out the New People’s Army (NPA), armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), for their terroristic and extortion activities among the rural business community.
“Based on the testimonies of the operators/drivers, the rebels said “Wa ni bayad gihatag sa kalihokan” (They failed to pay for the movement) which may refer to the extortion money,” PRO 13 Regional Director Chief Supt Rolando B. Felix told The Manila Bulletin on Sunday.
Some 30 fully armed NPA guerillas barged into the GMC’s bunkhouse and confiscated cellular phones and poured gasoline on four backhoes, one dump truck and one pay loader and set them on fire, PRO 13 report said.
The damage to property may reach P9,000,000 according to the Bureau of Fire Protection who responded to the incident.
Butuan City Police Office (BCPO) are investigating the incident to identify and file charges against the perpetrators.
“Their (NPA) barbaric acts must be stopped and I urge the citizen, particularly the rural business sector to help the police and military in putting an end to this,” the region’s police chief said.
“Let us condemn these dastardly acts of the rebels who masquerade as a protector of the people but a group of bandits that resort to terrorize businesses to extort money and implant fear on the local folks,” Chief Supt. Felix said, adding “Help your PNP to monitor the presence of rebels in the different areas in Caraga and alert security forces to prevent similar attacks”.
