Scores hurt in Butuan road mishap

BUTUAN CITY – A passenger bus headed for the city center here was rammed from behind by a speeding dump truck on Thursday along Democrito Plaza Avenue, Purok 16, Barangay Mahay here, injuring 20 persons, including five who were critically hurt.

According to the police report, a Bachelor Bus travelling west from Surigao City had stopped by the curb to let off a passenger, at around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, when a Sinotruck dump truck loaded with gravel and sand rammed it from behind.

According to the Butuan City Police Office (BCPO), the impact was so strong that the passenger bus turned on its side.

“This resulted in multiple injuries to the passengers,” the BCPO report said.

Currently confined in various hospitals in this city are passengers Sarah T. Calamba, Adrienne G. Balan, Lina B. Alabat, Juliana Uy Mundia, Ramilyn E. Alabat, Roberto G. Sabanal, Helen N. Guitterez, Rita M. Omac, Arlene M. Barreza, Agripina C. Pertacorta, Erlinda H. Tagbi, Lorrige A. Gabato, Jocelyn L. Sincero, Manny M. Acut, Elsa B. Acut, Ronnel P. Torres, Esterlita P. Torres, 58, Jessie N. Guitterez, Elsie M. dela Cruz, and the bus driver Augusto Dequinio.

The driver of the dump truck, Rechie B. Serbo, has surrendered to authorities.

An investigation into the accident is still ongoing.
