Updated

By Ellalyn De Vera-Ruiz

Tropical storm ‘Paolo’ (international name: Lan) has entered the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Monday morning, and it will likely spawn rains in the Visayas starting Wednesday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) estimated the location of the storm at 1,070 kilometers (km) east of Surigao City in Surigao del Sur before Monday noon.

It has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

PAGASA weather forecaster Nikos Peñaranda said ‘Paolo’ has entered the country’s area of responsibility around 11 a.m. Monday.

It is the 16th cyclone to enter the country this year and second this month.

The storm, however, still has no direct effect over any part of the country as of Monday, Peñaranda said.

He said the cyclone may not make landfall and will likely shift northwest then north-northwest by Tuesdaytowards the general direction of Japan.

By Tuesday morning, PAGASA said the cyclone is expected at 800 km. east of Surigao City, and 735 km. east of Borongan City in Eastern Samar by Wednesday morning.

Peñaranda said tropical cyclone warnings may not be raised but the whole Visayas could experience rains due to the storm by Wednesday and Thursday.

PAGASA said the storm will be 1,025 km east of Baler, Aurora by Thursday, 1,060 km east of Tuguegarao City by Friday, and 1,110 km east of Basco, Batanes by Saturday.

Weather forecaster Gener Quitlong said the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) will be the predominant weather system that will affect the country today.

He said Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will have cloudy skies and light to moderate rains due to the ITCZ, known as a breeding ground for tropical cyclones.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon or evening, he added.
