Former president and incumbent Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Wednesday bolted her own party, the Lakas-CMD, to join President Duterte’s Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan party.
Arroyo took her oath of membership a few days after the PDP-Laban leadership announced it will no longer accept new members by November 30.
Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, PDP-Laban secretary general, administered the oath on Arroyo, who is expected to play a major role in her new party.
Also joining the PDP-Laban are Arroyo’s partymates, Bohol Rep. Arthur Yap Camiguin Rep. Xavier Jesus Romualdo and lawyer Raul Lambino, president of the Cagayan Special Economic Zone.
“My joining the PDP-Laban is to consolidate support for the President. It is a matter of course as we have been talking about this for quite some time,” Arroyo said in a statement.
Arroyo, founder and former chairman emeritus of Lakas-CMD, will leave her party to former Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez and former Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., current Lakas-CMD president and chairman, respectively.
