9 killed, one injured in NPA, Army encounter in Nueva Ecija

By Franco Regala

FORT RAMON MAGSAYSAY, Nueva Ecija — Nine members of the New Peoples Army (NPA) were killed while one from the military was wounded in an encounter in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija early morning Wednesday, according to reports released by the 7th Infantry Division (ID) of the Philippine Army (PA).

Maj. General Angelito M. De Leon, Commander of the 7th Infantry Division (7ID), said the government troops from the 84th Infantry (Victorious) Battalion, 7ID encountered at least 15 NPAs in Sitio Barat, Barangay Burgos, Carranglan, Nueva Ecija, at around 7:25 a.m Wednesday (Sept. 20) during the military operation.

The fatalities, who have yet to be identified, were discovered after the fight subsided. On the other hand, the wounded soldier was immediately brought to the nearest hospital for treatment, said De Leon.

He said the military troops were sent to the area to conduct “a focused military operation” as directed by 703rd Brigade Commander Colonel Abraham Claro Casis after receiving reports from local residents who  expressed dismay and were fed up with the NPAs’ extortion activities.

According to him, it was the Charlie Company of 84IB that was sent to inspect the area. Upon nearing the vicinity, they were suddenly fired upon by the NPA members.

“The NPAs suffered heavily from the encounter as they were outmaneuvered by the 84IB,” said De Leon.

Troops who cleared the area reportedly recovered 10 high-powered firearms and nine (9) backpacks with subversive documents.

“The troops immediately assumed defense position and firefight ensued,” said De Leon.

The 7ID launched pursuit operations against the rebels who escaped to prevent them from destroying flagship projects and committing other atrocities.

Meanwhile, Major General Emmanuel B. Salamat, Commander of the Northern Luzon Command, upon learning of the incident, congratulated the troops for their dedication and hard work.
