CHED lists popular courses; Business ad, education tops

Business administration-related, education, engineering, IT and medical-allied remain the most sought-after courses in college, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) said.

Based on the Higher Education facts and figures released by CHED, the top five disciplines in terms of enrollment for academic year (AY) 2016-17 are: (1) Business Administration-Related with 921,324 enrollees; (2) Education and Teacher Training with 740,713; (3) Engineering and Technology with 448,550; (4) Information and Technology with 398,765 and Medical-Allied with 203,561.

Meanwhile, CHED said that the top 10 most populated programs – in terms of enrollment – among male students for AY 2016-17 are: Information Technology, Business Administration, Criminology, Secondary Education, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Marine Transportation, Civil Engineering, Industrial Technology, Elementary Education and Marine Engineering/Technology.

For female students, the top 10 most populated programs – still based on enrollment – are  Business Administration, Secondary Education, Elementary Education, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Information Technology, Accountancy, Criminology, Tourism and Travel Management, Psychology, and Nursing. These, CHED said, include baccalaureate programs only.

Meanwhile, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) – with 38,732 enrollees – topped the list of Top 10 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in terms of enrollment for AY 2016 -17.

It was  followed by University of Santo Tomas (UST) with 35,633 enrollees; Bulacan State (BSU) University-Main with 33,431; Saint Louis University (SLU) with 32,725; South Upi College with 29,052; University of the Philippines (UP) -Diliman with 26,453; ICCT Colleges with 21,438; University of Mindanao (UM) with 21,333; De La Salle University (DLSU) with 19,191; and University of the Visayas (UV) with 18,942.

For AY 2015-16, the Top 10 HEIs – in terms of graduates – are PUP with 8,184 graduates; UST (8,117); BSU (7,926); Negros Oriental State University-Guihulngan (5,428); Far Eastern University (5,096); Cebu Technological University       (4,792); SLU (4,623); UP-Diliman (4,292); DLSU-Manila    (3,648) and Rizal Technological University       (3,622).

The top five programs – in terms of graduates for AY 2015-2016  – are Business Administration-  Related with 185,858 graduates; Education and Teacher Training (118,567); IT (77,250); Engineering and Technology (76,423) and Medical-Allied (41,805).

As of AY 2016-2017, CHED data showed that there are 1,943 HEIs nationwide – 233 are public and 1,710 are private.

For all disciplines, enrolment for the AY 2016-17 was at 3, 589, 484 wherein 1, 641, 607 were  enrolled in public HEIs while 1,947, 877 were enrolled in private HEIs. Meanwhile, there were 681, 468 graduates in all disciplines – of which 343, 628 were from public and 337, 840 were from private HEIs.
