San Fernando, Cebu – Three municipal councilors were arrested in a raid that yielded unlicensed firearms and packs of drugs Friday morning in San Fernando town, south of Cebu City.
A team from the Regional Intelligence Division (RID) of the Police Regional Office arrested Councilors Edwin Villaver, Alfonso Donaire IV, and Johnny Arriesgado. Arriesgado is the president of the town’s Association of Barangay Councils and sits as ex-officio council member.
The arrest came after RID personnel raided the houses of the three councilors on the strength of search warrants issued by Regional Trial Court Judge Jerry Dicdican.
Seized during the raids were a .45 caliber pistol, a .45 caliber magazine, two pieces of live ammunition, one defective 30 caliber rifle, and two packs of substance believed to be shabu.
The police said the large pack of substance was seized from Donaire and a medium pack from Villaver.
Donaire, who is chairman of the council’s Committee on Public Order and Safety, strongly denied involvement in the illegal drugs trade.
He said the packs believed to contain shabu were not his, but admitted owning the unlicensed guns.
