Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Director General Isidro Lapeña reported that a total of P82.52 billion worth of illegal drugs were seized during the first year of the Duterte administration compared to P4.8 billion seized during the last year of the previous administration.

After a year of trying to defeat the illegal drugs menace in the country, the PDEA chief said that despite their achievements, there is still more work to be done.

During the Mindanao Hour on Friday, the PDEA chief made a comparison of the achievements of the first year of Duterte administration and the last year of former President Aquino.

Of the total drugs seized, P12.62 billion (2,446 kilos) were shabu compared to P940 million (820 kilos) of the last year of the Aquino administration, he said.

Lapeña attributed the increase to the intensified anti-drug campaign of the Duterte administration with 64,397 police operations conducted as of June 28, 2017.

As a result of the intensified anti-illegal drug campaign, over 1.3 million drug addicts surrendered as of June 28, he said.

He said the police arrested 86,984 drug suspects from 8,766 of the previous administration.

There were also 302 government workers involved in illegal drugs arrested, while there were only 97 government workers arrested during the past administration.

He said the authorities discovered nine clandestine laboratories, including two mega shabu laboratories, compared to only three during the last year of the previous administration.

He said they also dismantled 152 drug dens compared to 82 in the previous administration.

However, Lapeña reported at least 57 police killed and 150 wounded during drug operations.

He said they will continue the Duterte administration’s drug war since 48 percent, or 20,126 barangays out of the total 42,036 barangays in the country have been affected by drugs, noting that the National Capital Region (NCR) has the highest at 97 percent.
